Windsong Farm Golf Club was opened in June 2004 under Jim Lehman and Jeff Knutson’s vision to create a classically designed and superbly maintained golf course. Furthermore, they set out to create a membership that would rely on courtesy and respect for others in place of rules and regulations to handle most situations.
Fast forward to 2009 and I can assure you that their vision has come true.
They conducted a national search for a golf professional and found one of my favorite pros, Jamie Alderman. He arrived from Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore—which hosted the 2002 U.S. Senior Open.
We were greeted by two original members, Peter Cook and Steve Erickson who walked the back nine with us. I asked Peter why he thought Windsong was one of his favorite golf courses.
He replied: “The playability of the course—wide fairways and large greens.”
He went on to say that you better be a good iron player because the greens are so fast that if you don’t hit it close to the hole, then you better be a good putter.
The condition of the golf course was exceptional, and my colleague Dee threw a very steady 74 and took a dollar of my money.
After golf, we sat down in the clubhouse and had a delicious lunch with the Ericksons and Alderman. I had so many questions to ask.
First, I asked as to the events this fine club has hosted. I was shocked at his reply for the club has hosted 13 USGA qualifiers, the 2008 Minnesota State Amateur, and five section PGA events. Quite a resume! They also will host next years Men’s Big Ten Conference Championship.
Of all the golf courses that have been built over the last two decades in the state of Minnesota, there is nothing that compares to Windsong Farm. In addition to the incredible playing conditions, Windsong’s commitment to families and junior golf make it a true gem.
