I suppose you think I am going to write about Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, and Trevino as they are often considered the perfect foursome. However, my perfect foursome sits in downtown Wayzata in a beautiful men’s store called the Foursome. The historical roots of this store go back 70 years, as the founding store owners were school teachers that were passionate about golf.
Professional golfers have traditionally been recognized for their attire and the tradition is upheld at most golf courses today with dress codes enforced throughout the golf community. In fact, a golfer’s attire is seen almost as a uniform with the logos of Polo, Lacoste, and Bobby Jones proudly displayed across the golfers chest.
As a golf professional, I too take pride in my dress and have received many compliments about my attire. I favor the old classics of tweed and cashmere—and being from Ireland—I am often asked if I purchase my clothes on my golfing trips abroad. I usually fib and respond, “yes.” The truth is I rely on the Foursome for providing me with my wardrobe.
It is rare today that one can find a store that provides true “customer service,” but this gem in Wayzata needs some accolade as they are the best. For instance, two years ago I was an invited speaker on the Golf Channel and I wanted to be comfortable in front of a national audience.
I spoke with proprietor Gordy Engel about my upcoming engagement and he rallied to the task with the ease of a true master. Within the span of 30 minutes I walked out of the store with the most beautiful outfit that consisted of a Ballin pant, a cashmere Raffi sweater, and Bobby Jones golf shirt! My nerves were tamed, somewhat, and I was able to concentrate fully on my segment of the show. Thanks Gordy!
There is an old saying that I try to live by and that is you should always dress for the job you want . . . not the job you have. At the Foursome, you can do that with ease.
