Rethinking Higher Learning

To Vance Opperman: I'd be careful about throwing barbs at women or any professional, for that matter, who lacks a college degree [November's "Open Letter" about Carol Molnau]. There are many of us who are proud products of the '50s and '60s, who took shorthand and typing then headed to "the City" in search of employment.

I'd like to think my hard work, perseverance, and some God-given smarts have had something to do with the fact that I have successfully held a management position with a large, global company for several years. I'm on my fifth passport and still going strong.

Molnau may or may not be doing the best job, and it may or may not be due to the fact that she has no college degree. I've come in contact with so many incompetent graduates in my career, they would line the highway from Minneapolis to Duluth. Don't sell us short.
