Two years from now, you won’t be taking the “light rail” to work. Instead, you’ll be hopping on the “Metro,” perhaps by way of the “Blue Line.”
The Metropolitan Council on Wednesday approved a new naming system and logo for the Hiawatha light-rail line and future transit corridors. The system will be known as “Metro” when the 11-mile Central Corridor line begins service in 2014. Each transit line within the system will have its own color.
The Hiawatha line, which runs from downtown Minneapolis to the Mall of America, will be known as the Blue Line—and the Central Corridor line connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul will be the Green Line. Meanwhile, the Interstate 35W bus-rapid transit line will be the Orange Line, and the Cedar Avenue bus-rapid transit line will be the Red Line.
The system’s logo will feature a “T” instead of an “M.”
The goal of the new system name and brand is to establish a “single consistent expectation” for users of the light-rail and bus-rapid transit lines as the transitway system continues to develop, the Met Council said.
The eastern half of the Green Line will be completed in 2014, and a western extension—the Southwest Corridor—is slated for service in 2018. Meanwhile, the Red Line is under construction and expected to open in November 2012, and the Orange Line is in development.
Prior to choosing the name “Metro,” the Met Council sought feedback from the public and various other transit stakeholders. Local residents submitted names in early 2010, a group of public- and private-sector marketing professionals narrowed the choices, and the name and logos were then tested with current and potential riders.
The Met Council is the regional planning organization in the seven-county Twin Cities metro area. It runs the regional bus and light-rail system and the Northstar commuter rail, among other functions.
