St. Michael-based Jet Edge, Inc.’s high-pressure waterjet systems—which are used to manufacture parts for NASCAR racecars—will be featured on Monday’s episode of Modern Marvels.
A local manufacturer has garnered national attention for its technology, which makes precision cuts with high-pressure streams of water.
Jet Edge, Inc., a St. Michael-based manufacturer of waterjet systems, will be featured on Modern Marvels January 30 on History’s H2 channel. The episode, titled “Under Pressure,” will examine Jet Edge’s technology and illustrate how ordinary tap water and sand can be transformed into a cutting stream powerful enough to slice through 15-inch titanium and precise enough to manufacture precision parts for NASCAR.
The episode was shot at Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) in North Carolina. MWR uses a Jet Edge waterjet cutting machine to create more than 1,000 parts for each of its NASCAR racecars.
“We’re thrilled that Modern Marvels and History [are] going to explain the very cool science behind creating ultra high-pressure water and how waterjets are used to cut virtually any material,” Jet Edge Marketing Manager Nancy Lauseng said in a statement. “You come into contact with things every day that were cut with waterjet and probably don’t even realize it. The rubber floors at your gym, the baby carrots you had for lunch, the diapers on your baby, and your car’s steering wheel were all made with waterjets, and many of those waterjet systems were built right here in St. Michael.”
The episode will air at 9 p.m. Monday and will also be available at the History channel’s website.
Jet Edge was founded in 1984. It designs and manufactures waterjet systems for precision cutting, surface preparation, and coating removal in a wide range of industries, including automotive and aerospace.
