Girl World!
Last August, the Strib reported that women in their 20s living in U.S. cities are outearning their male peers. That follows other reports over the past few years about how young women are increasingly outnumbering men in colleges and many law schools.
More recently, the Manhattan Institute's City Journal magazine published an interesting, if mildly condescending article on "The New Girl Order"
One thing I'd like to know: Do women believe the modern feminist movement that began in the 1970s has therefore succeeded, or nearly so? At least in the work world? I'm out of this loop. Your humble scribe is nearly 50, and works in a profession that's increasingly femaleāI've had male bosses and female bosses, and gotten along with both. Women's professional presence in publishing is a given these days.
But I've never worked in the corporate world, and I wonder how much the dynamic there has changed. (Maybe my fellow TCB blogger, Whatsername, can shed some light.) Minnesota has had some notable female big-company CEOs: Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Marti Morfitt (CNS), Janet Dolan (Tennant), Sally Smith (Buffalo Wild Wings). But not all that many. And that appears to remain the scene nationally.
On the other hand, more and more women are becoming vice presidents and division leaders. I'm guessing some sort of glass ceiling still exists, though it probably has a few cracks and holes in it by now. Perhaps it will shatter once us old boomer guys leave the scene and a more enlightened generation takes over. A woman president might speed up that process.
But enough about me. Women, what do you think?
